Reading - "My Brother's Flying Machine" (4.RI.1 / 4.L.4)
This week, students will read the biography, "My Brother's Flying Machine." This expository story is about Wilbur and Orville Wright, two brothers who flew the first airplane. While reading, students will identify fact and opinion within a text, determine author's perspective, and understand prefixes, suffixes, and roots of various words. When determine author's perspective, readers determine how the author feels about a subject. To identify author's perspective, look for clues about how the author presents events and information.
Weekly Vocabulary Terms -
Students will continue to work daily in their learning centers to focus on reading comprehension, word work for spelling and vocabulary, writing, and reading non-fiction text on the program, Kidbiz3000.
Grammar - Homophones (4.L.1)
This week, students will identify homophones. Homophones are words that sound alike but have different spellings and meanings. For example, ant and aunt are homophones. Jan almost stepped on an ant on the sidewalk; Her aunt is coming to visit her this weekend. Other common homophones are to, too, and two.
Homework
Students will have homophones practice each night.
Math - Decimals (4.NF.6)
This weeks, students will relate decimals and fractions as parts of wholes. Students will also convert decimals into fractions and fraction into decimals with the denominators 10 and 100. Students should understand the following vocabulary terms, decimal, decimal point, tenth, hundredth, place value, number line, grid model equivalent decimals, fraction. A practice page will be sent home each night for review. Also, check out the "Links for Learning" page for more skills practice.
Spelling - The Variant Vowel /o/ (4.L.2)
This week, students will spell words with the variant vowel /o/. Here are the following spelling words - walker, chalk, laws, stalk, bald, caught, drawn, halt, strawberry, fought, caller, half, straw, small, thought, talking, awe, shawl, false, squall, south, pouch, annoy, wallpaper, awkward.
Students will be assessed on their spelling words on Thursday, 2/5.
A homework page is assigned each night for spelling practice and word recognition.
Science - Electricity (RI.1)
This week students will continue to learn about electricity. Students will identify atoms and how they relate to static electricity. Students will also learn about current electricity and how to make and identify different types of circuits including parallel and series. Students will need to know the following vocabulary terms related to this unit: electricity, static electricity, current electricity, atoms, protons, neutrons, electrons, attract, repel, parallel circuit, series circuit, magnetism, insulator, and conductor.
